Situated approximately 1 mile to the South West of Burnley Manchester Road station on the East Lancashire Line, Towneley Level Crossing Signal Box was opened in 1878. The box was originally fitted with a 26 lever Saxby & Farmer frame, but following the commissioning of Preston PSB and subsequent downgrading of the box to a non-block post in 1973, this was later removed and replaced by an easier to maintain panel.
