Townsend Fold Signalling Diagram

Townsend Fold

This small 10-lever signal box was opened in 1959, replacing an earlier box which was situated on the opersite side of the line. However, in April 1981, just 22 Years after its opening, British Rail closed the line between Heywood and Rawtenstall rendering the box dormant. It remained this way until 1991 when the East Lancashire Railway took over the line between Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall, and the box that we see today was brought back in to use.
