Walkden Signalling Diagram

Walkden

Commisioned at the same time as the lines opening in 1888, Walkden signal box remained vital to the operation of the Wigan to Manchester via Atherton line until its closure and subsequent demolition in 2013. Origionally a quadrouple line, the route was rationalised and the double line with trailing crossover we see today was brought into existance in 1965. The box was a fringe to Manchester Piccadilly Signalling Centre and worked absolute block to Atherton, or Crow Nest Junction when Atherton was switched out.
